The best racing game ever runs on Linux!
Best racing game ever runs on linux!
Disclaimer: I'm not a racing game fan, in general I don't like racing games at all. So if I say something is the best racing game ever, it's not based on the usual things most racing fans would think make up the best racing game.
mindless gaming
Last night I was looking for a linux game, to do some mindless gaming on the and of a tiring day.
And I found the greatest thing, the racing game I've been playing a lot as a child is available as a remake and it runs on Linux. I've been looking for something similar to this game of and on for a long time now.
ultimate stunts
Obviously I've been looking in the wrong places! The game I'm talking about is stunts and it's available as a remake named ultimatestunts. The game is not finished yet, but it's very, very promising and it's already very playable.
Best game ever
The reason I think this is the best racing game ever, is not based on stunning graphics and realistic gameplay. No it's based on what games where intended for: the entertainment factor. Stunts was such a great game because of the fun and addictive game-play and the in-game level editor. And the most important thing about it: the complete lack of realism.
to addictive
Stunts was a stunt drive racing game, it let you do all kinds of crazy stunts. Loopings,corkscrews,jumps,etc..
Really great, the only downside to it was that it was much to addictive. And to my great surprise the remake is even better. The remake has all the great stuff of the classic stunts game, and adds modern graphics and network play to the mix. Imagine building your own stunt track and racing it with your friends over the internet.
FREE!
And last but not least: it's totally free, free as in free beer and free as in free software. So if you know how to code you can even have a hack at it now!
I'm really going to feel bad about this guy for destroying the rest of my productive live :-)
Release date
The game is scheduled for release in 2009 according to the schedule on the site. For now a (very playable )beta release is available in binary form and in source code.
compile it
I had to compile it for my system, not to difficult. If you want to do that:
(I'm running debian, minor differences may apply to your system)
You need hardware graphics acceleration (if your running compiz your ok)
I always install the build-essential package, easy way to install compilation prerequisites.
You'll also need libsdl-image and libsdl ( the dev versions ) search for these in your package manager.
Download the source code with data files here:
http://www.ultimatestunts.nl/index.php?page=2&lang=en
unpack the file, enter the map.
$tar xzvf ultimatestunts-srcdata-0751.tar.gz
$cd ultimatestunts-srcdata-0751/
then enter:
$./configure
$make
$su (in ubuntu you do $sudo make install)
enter your password
#make install (not in ubuntu)
#exit (not in ubuntu)
If the ./configure gives you a missing something in the output, install the missing items by searching in your package manager. And after that do:
$make clean
and start over from $./configure
start the game by typing ustunts at the shell.

I think that this is a cool racing game that is free like free beer (yum) but as far as best ever I would have to go with Mario Cart oh ya!
Just had to comment on

Just had to comment on this..
I know that this thread is a bit old, but.. happened to install UltimateStunts on my Ubuntu only the day before yesterday. Played a fair deal of Stunts myself in the early days.. In this one I can't even look over the wheel! Neither can I find the control to switch that off. Though I feel it may be promising - and sympathize with every effort involving free software.
But more important: any one of you ever played TrackMania?? Easy, nice graphics, loadsa possibilities - not that any of them are even necessary - starter version is even free. And ADDICTIVE as hell!
Full version will cost you of course. But this is the only reason i keep running Windows (Wine won't do the trick) !
O, good old times

I haven't played a game for so long, but I'm downloading just now! I loved that game :))
I dunno mate.

I dunno mate. Stunt-car-racer on Amiga was the best racing game ever - back then.
But motorstorm or burnout totally blows it away ... it isn't just the graphical prowess, it's the controls, physical reactions, loading, size of tracks, 'enemy' ai - the whole works, it really just isn't in kansas anymore.
Not that there's anything wrong with a fun ride down memory lane - and to be honest I get much more and further lasting enjoyment myself from using emacs than in any 3d extravaganza and physics powerhouse - but put the headline into perspective!
definitely agree with admin

definitely agree with admin games are about game play to me not graphics its what makes games like roller coaster tycoon great almost a decade later. theres nothing wrong with good graphics but the game play is what counts.
It is an OK game

Hello,
Played the game, I like the fact that a number of different types of cars are available, but what about the road-layout its always the same. Took me about 10min to clear the whole thing including the weird jumps/turns. In the provided scenery it is hard to make out coming turns when I drive from the first person perspective (driver's camera), but alls well when I have behind the car camera. Finally, how come the car doesn't get damaged when I land on the road from high jumps at top speed?
The handling of the cars is not the best, especially the super-fast car (the last option in the cars menu) just does not respond well to the button presses. I should also be able to set the acceleration and top-speed for any car I want, which is not provided. Like the music though.
it's not finished
admin 52 weeks 19 hours 36 min 53 sec ago
it's not finished, and you can choose different tracks, can't you?
The best thing is you can easily build your own tracks, that's one of the greatest features.
And the car handles high jumps like that because you can't do any stunts if it behaves differently I assume. If you cleared everything in 10 min you must be superman. Or I'm the worst player ever, which is an option too :-)
yeah but..

How about games that look stunning and have stunning gamplay..
like.. burnout paradise..??
the title for this should be
"The best racing game ever runs on Linux! NOT!"
I could not even stand
Anonymous 1 year 10 hours 24 min 50 sec ago
I could not even stand looking at the screenshots of that "best ever" game. Did you play Burnout Paradise?
did you read the article?
admin 1 year 6 hours 13 min 48 sec ago
Did you read the article, or did you just go directly to the screenshots link?
I'm very biased on what is best, I don't pretend to have any knowledge about racing games. The last racing game I played before this one was mario kart :-)
This game has just tremendous gameplay, and if you like me think a computer game is not good just because it looks stunning, you might even like it. If you think a game should look like the real thing all the way, then in your opinion this will not be the best.
But do you know pacman is rated as one of the best video games of all time on many lists? Do you think pacman has great screenshots?
Classic games used to be based on gameplay, not on graphics. This forced people to be creative and develop interesting games with minimal resources. By the way this game is completely open source, so if someone thinks it should look better, your free to design your own graphics for it.
