The fastest linux distro is claimed by yoper, and it may well be the fastest linux out of the box in many cases. In my opinion there really is no such thing as the fastest linux. Why? Well, speed of your OS is very dependent on what hardware the OS was build for and what applications you use. So if you really want the fastest Linux system I think you should look at another approach:

Linux from scratch

Linux from scratch is a distribution which allows you to completely build a Linux system from source code. This means you can control every single thing in your OS and you can actually compile every single thing in it for speed on your particular system.

Make your Linux faster

If your just looking to make your Linux installation faster, think about compiling a custom kernel. it doesn't make a difference like it used to, as the kernel is mostly modular nowadays, but still distribution kernels are compiled to run on general systems, if you tweak the kernel for your processor type and system resources, you may get a faster running Linux system.

If you need a fast desktop system, you should start looking at a lightweight window manager, this will make your system appear faster.
