I was all excited when my new Canon EOS 400D landed in my hands today. I think that it’s a great piece of equipment, although I haven’t yet played around with it enough.
I thought I needed to buy a separate cable to computer-control it, and the USB cable was only a data transfer cable.
editing video made with the modern high definition camcorders on the commandline. It's difficult to find which programs to use. This story is by someone who seems to have found a solution.
These are some notes on how I persuaded Debian GNU/Linux to talk to my very fine Canon PowerShot A40 digital camera, which interfaces only via the USB port. There should be something useful here for users of other GNU/Linux distributions, but for this installation I am using Debian Woody on my Toshiba Portégé 3110CT laptop.
