Is your tv running Linux? (yet)

Posted April 6th, 2010 by cool

Some manufacturers are using Linux for their television sets, Sony for instance has a impressive list of tv's which are running Linux.

There are also some televisions which can actually be hacked into to unlock extra features.
Sounds cool? It is! Read on for the full story...

Sony is using Linux in it's bravia series of tv's too bad there's not much you can do with that as of today. Samsung on the other hand has a list of tv's which are readily able to be hacked into. Always wanted to control your tv from a shell?

Project samygo makes it possible to patch your samsung flatscreen tv and add some great features to it. It just makes you wonder why they don't make their tv's do this by default:

* Play movies from usb disk
* Play movies from network shares
* Record tv (PVR) to usb disk/network share
* Browse the internet
* Internet television

For patching the device it's needed to enable telnet on your TV, which is cool all by itself if you ask me, telnet-ing to your tv. Wouldn't it be nice to ssh in to your TV start the recording of your favorite television show you forgot to program for recording.

Visit the samygo project site for more information, a list of supported models and software downloads.

Sony Bravia runs Linux too, lets hope someone finds a way to hack sony firmware soon

Sony's geriatric executives.

Anonymous 1 year 43 weeks 6 days 3 hours ago

I reckon the problem is Sony's ageing chief executives who are living in a past that is no longer here. Sony owned portable music devices with the Walkman, but they allowed Apple to steal an entire segment from them with solid state storage with the iPod. Sony were very late to switch from CRT monitors to LCD. It's the same old geriatric here with perhaps a little Alzheimers thrown in as well to make them forget the mistakes of the past and compel them to repeat them.

Sony is banned from my house ...

since they removed "Other OS" option from PS3. Besides, I found almost all Sony products to be overpriced compared with their competitors. Next question: Have they released source code as required by GPL?

Sony Bravia running Linux

So what are Sony giving back for the free use of a billion dollar
operating system? Is it a contributor, or just another corporate
freeloader? How about running an article telling us something about that.
